Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple are types of cryptocurrencies you’ve probably heard about, but plenty of others are just plain bizarre. And with market capitalization having grown from about $18 billion in January 2017 to $800 billion in January 2018, it’s worth knowing how many strange cryptocurrencies there are, even the odd ones.

From Dogecoin, based on that popular doge meme, to Whoppercoin, designed for Burger King fanatics, here is our definitive list of the weirdest and most outrageous cryptocurrencies on the market today.

Dogecoin

Based on the popular Shiba Inu dog meme, Dogecoin began as a joke, but it enjoys peak valuation well over $2-billion a year. Some view the currency as a more friendly and approachable alternative to bitcoin with a vibrant Reddit community. Members often come together to fund a number of charitable efforts and other projects like sponsoring NASCAR.

Whoppercoin

Thanks to Russia, the world got to see the Whoppercoin, which was used only for buying Burger King Whoppers. It was basically a blockchain-based rewards program through which customers racked up one Whoppercoin for each ruble spent. Those who accrued 1,700 Whoppercoins got a free burger. Sadly, the cryptocurrency lasted about as long as your post-meal satiety might.

Unobtanium

If you were a fan of “Avatar,” Unobtanium may sound familiar. It was the precious resource that prompted miners to invade the fictitious planet. Now you can trade the currency, though it’s just as rare as in the movie. Referred to as Uno coin, the cryptocurrency is unusual in that just 250,000 Uno will ever be mined over 30 years. The creators value low inflation, fair distribution and scarcity, making it highly collectible.

MORE Coin (Formerly Legend Room)

With an aim to create a collection of one-of-a-kind nightlife destinations, MORE Coin functions truly as a club, “not a dance hall with a cover charge.” With locations in Hollywood and Las Vegas, MORE provides entry into its club through the ownership of MORE Coins. Along with escorted entry into a private VIP section, members enjoy access to a series of announced and unannounced evenings with recording artists and entertainers.

Garlicoin

Garlicoin describes itself as “the cryptocurrency you never thought you needed and you probably don’t.” What began as a joke on a Reddit post won enough interest that its market cap briefly reached just under $1 million USD in 2018, proving that funny can sometimes lead to some serious money.

Dentacoin

Calling itself ”The Blockchain Solution for the Global Dental Industry”, Dentacoin is ideal for crypto-loving dentists. Supporters claim Dentacoins can be used to share data and medical records, pay for procedures and trade materials and products. However, as of April 12, only 1,827 dentists populated the Dentacoin ecosystem, so it’s unclear how long Dentacoin will last.

Insanecoin

What if cryptocurrency was simply a state of mind? On the website for Insanecoin, its creators write, “You don’t have to be insane to be part of our community but it sure couldn’t hurt.” Insanecoin apparently offers many possible use cases, including messaging, coding, content distribution and data checking. If you’re already crazy about cryptocurrency, Insanecoin might push you over the edge.
